Welcome to MKAM

Posted by Louise

You have connected to one of the select few IAM groups that cater for both car drivers and motorcyclists. Many of MKAM's near 350 members have passed or are intending to take IAM Tests for car, bike or both vehicles. Our Mass Assessment Days regularly see over 40 motorcyclists of varying standards gather for our monthly ride-outs, and we provide guidance to around 50-60 drivers at various stages of preparation for their test.

Whether you have only recently passed your DSA Test or have half a million miles or more under your belt, there is always something that you can do to improve the standard of your driving or riding, because the perfect driver or rider has not been invented. It is said that 98% of UK drivers believe that they are above average drivers: at least half of these must be mistaken, as some of the remaining two percent are definitely above average, they just lack the self confidence to recognise the fact.

People from all sorts of ages and backgrounds become Advanced Drivers and Riders. It is never too soon, or too late to learn if you are willing to listen and apply the guidance that we give to you. Advanced Driving/Riding is not a one-size fits all approach to motoring: our driving needs to adapt to the road conditions. Statistics show that IAM members who have passed the Advanced Driving Test, are up to 75% less likely to have an accident than the average driver*. We don’t crawl along at a snail’s pace, waiting for danger to appear in front of us. In fact Advanced Drivers and Riders are able to make better progress, by searching for chances to move through traffic, choosing safe places to overtake, planning our driving, anticipating what other road users are going to do and trying to be ahead of the game. We help people to become confident and decisive drivers and riders.

Whatever your reason for coming to us, we will be able to help you (provided it is related to Driving or Riding!). If you lack confidence on our ever-busier motorways, have returned to driving after a break (whether voluntary or enforced following a misdemeanour), are a newly-qualified driver/rider seeing that extra safety edge or just want to confirm that you are as good as you think you are, or want to enjoy your driving or riding more, we will be able to give you the guidance that you need.

Whether you choose to undertake our guidance or not, please be safe and smooth in your driving, and treat other road users with courtesy and consideration no matter how bad you think their driving is.

What is Advanced Driving?

Posted by Jamie

“Advanced driving is the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely. systematically and smoothly, using road and traffic conditions to progress unobtrusively with skill and responsibility. This skill requires a positive but courteous attitude and a high standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective all-round observation, anticipation and planning. This must be coordinated with good handling skills. The vehicle should be at the right place on the road at the right time, travelling at the right speed with the correct gear engaged and can always be stopped safely on its own side of the road in the distance that can be seen to be clear.” (DSA RoADA IAM 1997)

Who are the IAM?

As a charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (the IAM) supports the raising of driving and riding standards and campaigns for increased on-road skills. We support and represent motorists, motorcyclists and are developing programmes for cyclists too. We offer practical driving and riding programmes and urge all road users to act more responsibly and safely.
